Buildings, which were built more than 30 years ago, needed a major overhaul. Redevelopment had to take place with old buildings simply collapsing around the city due to negligence. Permissions for their reconstruction given with additional FSI under the new provisions of General Development Control Regulations (GDCR).

A SVNIT team consisting of three department professors has been authorized to advise the authorities on structural stability of buildings. The team had recently advised on the demolition of the Surat court building.More than 100 high-rises and five-floor buildings, which were in a dilapidated condition, are being reconstructed and this redevelopment project has finally gained pace.
